This summer, it is crucial that our community is aware that
seniors are very susceptible to heat related illnesses. When combining
medication usage along with outdoor activity, it is important that you are
aware of simple preventative measures you can take to stay safe and healthy
this summer.
Hydration
is Key!
•
Drink plenty of water! At least 6-8 glasses of water a day!
•
Avoid excessive alcoholic beverages. They may satisfy
thirst, however can cause the body to become dehydrated. WATER IS #1!
Dress for
the occasion!
•
Wear lightweight loose fitting clothes that reflect the
sunlight and maintain the body temperature.
•
If wearing a swimsuit- remember to use a cover up to protect
your skin when not in the pool!
•
Protect face and head by wearing sun visors, wide brimmed
hats, or some type of hat that offers shade
•
Protect your eyes by wearing good sunglasses with UV
Protection!
•
REMEMBER YOUR SUNSCREEN!
•
Acclimate your body to the heat before planning activities.
•
Plan activities during cooler periods of the day/evenings to
avoid illness!
