As the holiday season starts
cooling off, staying warm, cozy and safe will make the seasons tidings much
brighter!
Home Heaters
·
Regular maintenance of
your heater is recommended.
·
By having a professional
check your heating system, they will be able to determine any faulty parts,
unlit pilot lights, and the space around the heater is clear.
Space Heaters
·
Using a space heater can
be safe and convenient; however, they also pose a fire risk if used improperly.
Some safety tips include keeping at least three feet away from flammable
materials and are placed on a level surface.
·
Place heater away from
main walkways!
·
Watch children and pets
around the heater, they may be burned!
·
Do not use extension
cords to plug in your heater.
·
Make sure to keep the
heater out of the bathroom area since there is a high risk of contact with
water and could be an electrocution and burn risk.
Fireplace and Wood Stoves
·
If you have a wood stove
or fireplace in your home, make sure to never leave the unit unattended. Keep
anything that could burn at least three feet away especially if you hang large
stockings over the mantel.
·
When building a fire,
make sure to not use large amounts of paper or cardboard.
·
NEVER burn charcoal in
your fireplace or stove, burning this will give off carbon monoxide gas, which
is poisonous!
·
Remember not to use
lighter fluid or flammable liquids to start your fire.
SMOKE ALARMS!
Staying nice and warm is important;
however having a working battery, operated smoke alarm is crucial! This is the
best way to alert you and your family of fire danger in your home. A smoke
alarm should be placed by your sleeping quarters and tested on a monthly basis.
Batteries should be replaced if the unit chirps frequently or on a yearly
basis. Never borrow a battery for your smoke alarm. Remember a smoke alarm is
your nose at night and can detect any smoke quickly if working properly. We
recommend that you change your smoke alarm unit after ten years. Keeping your
unit fresh, working with a new battery will ensure alert quickly! ALWAYS
REMEMBER TO HAVE A SAFETY PLAN IN PLACE –KNOW TWO WAYS OUT!
