EXAMINATION

The examination process is conducted in phases and is designed to evaluate your potential for employment as a Firefighter.

The written examination measures some of the basic skills necessary to perform successfully as a Firefighter.  Although the test questions relate to firefighting, no prior knowledge of firefighting service is necessary.  The examination covers listening comprehension, reading comprehension, EMS and mathematics.  A preparation study guide will be provided.

INTERVIEW

An initial interview will be conducted to evaluate general qualifications for employment as a Firefighter.  Candidates will be invited to the interview process based on the results of the written examination.  Candidates are evaluated in the categories of work and educational history, ability to make common sense judgments, communications skills, interview behavior and problem solving.

CANDIDATE PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST (CPAT)

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) consists of several events involving strength, endurance and agility.  The events are related to job tasks of a Firefighter and are designed to test readiness to perform physical tasks during training and thereafter.

This Joint Recruitment process utilizes the Phoenix Metro CPAT.  Candidates are required to have successfully completed the CPAT within a 12 month period prior to offer of full-time employment.  CPAT information and registration is available on-line.  See any joint recruitment department’s website for more information.

RECRUITMENT ELIGIBILITY

A recruitment eligibility list will be established based on the results of the first two phases of the process.  This eligibility list will be in effect for a minimum of one-year and will be used by all four departments to select candidates for further testing and recruitment.

Candidates will be eligible for employment with the Sun City, Sun City West, Surprise and El Mirage Fire Departments based on the candidate’s selection on their application.  Any candidate that is selected to continue in the recruitment process and subsequently is offered a full-time position and voluntarily turns it down will become ineligible for all four departments for that eligibility period.

INDIVIDUAL DEPARTMENT INTERVIEW(S)

When a Department has a need to recruit full-time members, candidates will be selected from the recruitment eligibility list.  At this point another, interview or series of interviews, will be conducted by the individual department.  These interviews are designed to be more in depth and be tailored to the administering Department’s specific needs.  These interviews will further evaluate the candidate’s background, thought processes and potential for working as a Firefighter.

The Department administering the second interview(s) will make full-time employment offers to selected candidates.  Selected candidates will begin steps in pre-employment with the department making the full-time employment offer.  This pre-employment phase will include a medical physical, background investigation and other steps required for full-time employment.  These other steps will be outlined at the time of the employment offer.  Candidates not selected will have their names placed back on the recruitment eligibility list and be eligible for future employment opportunities by all selected departments.

Once a candidate has successful passed all phases of the process, they are officially offered and may accept a position as a recruit firefighter and will then enter the training phase of their employment.
