As reported in Firehouse Magazine, a national publication, the Sun City Fire Department provides the citizens of the community with one of the lowest fire losses for any city its size and age In the United States. The department has achieved this level of success through an innovative approach of automatic aid with other fire departments and other unique programs designed to minimize fire and emergency related losses.
Of the over 10,700 calls the fire department responds to annually, only 1.2% or 92 calls are related to fire activities. The annual fire loss for all types of fires in 2002 was $1,345,786.
The fire department responds to all fire related calls in addition to emergency medical calls, automobile accidents and extrication, flooding conditions, trapped animal rescues, and hazardous materials incidents to name a few.
The firefighting staff of the fire district consists of 62 full time personnel, with a minimum complement of 17 personnel manning each of the three shifts 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. Each shift consists of three engine companies and one Ladder Company, which are strategically located throughout the city.
All firefighters are state certified Firefighter I & II, with an additional 40 hours of state certified training in first responder hazardous materials.
The Sun City fire and emergency operations management division operates under the nationally recognized Incident Command System ensuring a safe and rapid deployment of personnel on the emergency scene. It is through operational programs in continual review that the citizens of Sun City may continue to enjoy one of the most fire safe communities in the nation.
