RELEASE DATE: February 23, 2006

TOPIC: Personal Emergency Plan

The Sun City Fire Department would like to ensure that in the case of an emergency, by following the simple steps listed below, you and your family would be prepared.  Having an emergency plan in place within your home and a designated meeting place will help you in an emergency.

Fire Escape Planning

  1. Within your home, know two ways out of each room!
  2. Crawl low under smoke!
  3. If in your bedroom and the smoke alarm sounds, close your door, call 911, and leave by exiting through a window! If you have Jalousie type windows, these may be a challenge to get out of, open the window as wide as possible and stay as close to the fresh air as possible!  Tell the 911 operators that you are in your room!
  4. When you are out of the home, stay out!
  5. Have a designated meeting spot planned so that loved ones will be able to meet. Remember do not leave until everyone knows where everyone is!

Preparing for a Natural Disaster (Floods, Thunderstorms, Extreme Heat)

  1. Stay indoors and away from windows as much as possible.
  2. Listen to your local broadcasting radio stations for continual updates.
  3. Have a safety grab and go kit prepared! These items include a basic first aid kit, flashlight, medication, spare eyeglasses, socks and items listed on the next page.
  4. Have extra drinking water available for each person (1 gallon per person per day)
  5. Avoid showering, during lightning storms (plumbing can conduct electricity)
  6. In storms, avoid downed power wires, and moving water
  7. When driving, use extreme caution due to slick surfaces and possible flood areas.

Preparing Technological/Man-Made Hazard (Homeland Security, Terrorism, Power Failure)

  1. STAY CALM!
  2. Have your grab and go kit prepared (see attached list for recommended items)
  3. Listen to your local radio station/news for updates

(Battery operated radio with extra batteries recommended- just in case of power failure)

  1. If there is a need to evacuate, have a home safety plan in place.
  2. If evacuation from the immediate area is needed, make sure you are aware of your community safety plan. (If you live in a facility, an emergency plan is prepared. If you live in a single family dwelling, stay tuned to your local broadcast stations for additional information)
  3. IF YOU ARE TO LEAVE AND GO TO A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBERS HOME- DRIVE SAFETY AND COMMUNICATE YOUR PLAN IN ADVANCE ! (the individual you may plan on staying with may have other plans in place)

REMEMBER IN ANY CASE:

STAY CALM!

HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE!*
